After reading “Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed For Men” by Caroline Criado-Perez, I was inspired to make a subway-themed concept map about why public transportation design fails women. As a frequent public transportation user, this is an issue close to my heart. I presented this infographic as the final project for my graduate design program’s theory and frameworks class.

Through graduate coursework in the Berkeley New Media department, I learned more about extractivism (extracting natural resources for profit that prioritizes short-term gain over the well-being of local communities). I was particularly struck by harmful and exploitative practices used to extract the cobalt used in our day-to-day electronics.
With classmates, I created a graphic novel aimed at educating children about cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the hidden cost of their electronics.
